Fresh faced, idealistic Erin Gruwell is ready to take on the world as she steps inside Wilson High School for her first day of teaching. Her class, a diverse group of racially charged teenagers from different walks of life--African Americans, Latinos, Asians, juvenile delinquents, gang members, and underprivileged students from poor neighborhoods--hope for nothing more than to make it through the day. the only thing they share is their hatred for each other and the understanding that they are simply being warehoused in the educational system until they are old enough to disappear. Despite her students obstinate refusal to participate during class, Erin tries various means to engage them on a daily basis. They spark a transformation in the classroom, compel them to listen and force her to take off her idealistic blinders and take in the kids survival stories of their undeclared war on the streets. Erin begins to connect with them. She brings in music from the Hood, and literature from another kind of ghetto, The Diary of Anne Frank, and with these simple tools she opens her student eyes to the experiences of those suffering intolerance throughout the world and the struggles of those outside their own communities. Knowing that every one of her students has a story to tell, Erin encourages them to keep a daily journal of their thoughts and experiences. After sharing their stories with one another, the students see their shared experience for the first time and open up to the idea that there are possibilities in life outside of making it to the age of eighteen.

Review about FREEDOM WRITERS

The freedom writers had served a lot especially about the students as high school students. In the beginning of the movie, the students created a lot of chaos and confrontations among themselves. Apart from that they didnt even seem to care about their studies. The problems in their lives had made them to be half-hearted people in studying as if they were forced to study.

After that the new teacher came and she had changed the students a lot especially in terms of their behaviour. The students had changed from the bad ones to the good ones. Their interests in studying also grew.

It was hard for the new teacher to develop the interest for the students to study. She even tried to borrow books from the school but one of the teachers didnt give the permission to her. Indeed the teacher bought the story books for the students. The old teachers in the school didnt even seem to care about the students' education. I think the new teacher did the right thing that she let the students to let out all their problems in a book this will help the teacher to assist the students how to solve the problems and at the same time know how to make the students succeed in their studies.

In my opinion, the Bruneian students are lucky as they are provided with adequate facilities and books for them to study.

Movie Review: Freedom Writer

Basically, I'm immensely impressed with this movie because it has an interesting storyline to it and it's also based on true to life situation. The introduction of this story is based upon a new teacher who is assigned to teached a particular grouped of teenagers whose background have a variety shapes and forms.

The plotlines of the story goes like these: the students introduced to the new teacher; they ignore, the teacher try to understand them and wanted to changed their views about life and trying to give them a message that everyone of them has a bright future ahead of them, they respond to the teacher and realised theirs errors and faults. Thus, as I watched the movie further I was totally glue to television because I want to know more and especially how the story ends.

In conclusion, this story touch me in a lot ways like it make me realise that I had a dream that wanted it to visualise into the real world and it kind of motivates me to study fort my life. In addition, this story has a connection with human's right to education no matter what background they have. There are still people and everyone has that rights and I believe this world wil prosper with that kind of idealism.

p.s Courage, it would seem, is nothing less than the power to overcome danger, misfortune, fear, injustice, while continuing to affirm inwardly that life with all its sorrows is good; that everything is meaningful even if in a sense beyond our understanding; and that there is always tomorrow.

According to this topic, an individual will need education to lead or have a better life. I must say i agree to this topic, as much as i don't want to admit it, but that's the fact. You gotta have what it the society wants or else you're just another useless human being(no offense but yea, that's how the world spin).

Today's generation, it is very common for people to go to Universities. But not in the past centuries, where going to school may even be a problem. If it is not about financial problem then it is about gender biased. What has that have anything to do with education? Oh yes it does. Story by my mother, my grandpa doesn't allow her and dint want her to go to school, only her brothers get to go to school. Why you may ask? Probably to them, daughters doesn't need much education cause they'll be leaving home one day(married to someone) therefore there is no need to spend that much money on the 'daughters'. It is so unfair i know, but what can they do right? And there we goes on complaining about how tired we are after school and etc, but never realised that how lucky we are to even have the opportunity to go to school, and more advantage in Brunei is that we receive education for free if we go to Government schools but we still take it for granted.

What i think about the education is that no doubt it is essential in ones life, but that individual will need to know how to promote their intelligence in a proper way. Unlike some terrorist etc, they have brilliant IQ but sadly enough, they used it in a wrong direction. Therefore, to all of us who gets to go to school, appreciate it and try your best to achieve what you want.

As they say ' The future is in your hand'.

Education is a fundamental right for all people, women and man, of all ages throughout the world. Every person, child youth and adult shall be able to benefits from educational opportunities designed to meet their basic learning needs to be able to survive, to live and work in dignity, to increase their standard of living. For example in developing countries like India. They're one of the over-populated countries; they have too much population to support with their little recourses. Therefore, most of them are living in poverty. Their government cannot afford to pay for their education. Most of them work in the farm helping their parents instead of studying.

Imagine life without education, they will not know the basic learning. For Example, The danger of aids, malaria, measles, the prevention etc. But even if they know the prevention, they will not be able to get well as they usually live in the remote area so to get medicine is difficult. Even if the government provide them with the medicine, I believe they rather used the traditional herbs as they do not know what medicine can do and how it works. So education is very important. Government should give full rights to them. And school should be free like in Brunei.

As the above title says it all. In my opinion, to me I find it true to the norm that education has the tremendous power to transform one's fortune and at the same time it's also a human rights where all walking of life has the right to education. Who wouldn't be its essential that all younger generation to have education. In addition, it'll help them to be prepared and to survive in a world that's constantly changes.

Honestly, folks you have to admit where education goes fortune comes in big bundles of money. I'm not only saying that education equals money. I meant people have to be intellectual in certain area where they can be part of the average steroetype community. In certain scenerio like the government's objective: to provide a standard of living to the society. In accordance to the Universal Declaration of human Rights in Article 26(2) that "Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strenthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the maintenance of peace".

Like in the above title and I seriousely stressed that out. In all conjunction, try visualise your life in the early 20th century where people hadn't got the rights to education and there lifes (majority) weren't that harmonious and stabalize in terms of income, security and health. Such circumstances that I can' imagine myself live in that sort of predicament. Therefore, I earnestly believe that education has the immense power to transform one's individual fortune ( i know i'm repeating the same lines but who care's >-< because it had such a beautiful tone to it).

Nowadays education is very significant in order to survive in today's sophisticated life. Without education it is very hard for us to get the desired job and even to earn money. If someone wants to build a house, he cannot build it just like that but there are certain things that need to be considered of like how many metres, how much sand is needed, what kind of bricks are suitable etc. This is because if these things are not to be considered, the house might create a lot of flaws and eventually collapse.Thus education which includes a lot of things are really important in order to ensure that the house is secure to be living in.

Another example is that a farmer may survive maybe for just a few months without education. But indeed there are so many problems of farming that need to be solved by using the intelligence of education. For instance if there are pests intruding the farms and there are herbs growth then it is prominent to find out on how to solve the problem. The solution is that to use pesticide and herbicides. But these things cannot be used in excess otherwise it may 'kill' the crops. Apart from that if he doesn't know how to deal with money very well then it is going to be a disaster if he wants to sell his crops. This is because if a company wants to buy from him then he needs to know obout 'commercial education'. This helps him in selling with a lot of profits.

But don't ever think that education always brings good things to human. In certain cases it might bring a tremendous problem to the society. For instance, if a person has the intelligence in computing then he might create a virus to be spread to other people's computers to destroy their data. This is called hacking. If this happens to a big company and suddenly the confidential and prominent data has disappeared due to the virus attack, this will bring a big lost to the company and eventually may get bankrupt!

New Year's resolution again!!

What are my resolutions?

• To get A's in all subjects (i.e physics, chemistry, gp and maths) during AS level and A level. . .
• To do revisions very often
• Improve my time management (since I got poor time management since previous years!!)
• Spend the holidays wisely (i.e to spend most of the time with lots of revisions rather than watching TV, sleeping and chatting hehehe:p)
• To do my homework before I can do anything else especially during the holidays!
• To read more english books in order to improve my vocabulary. . .

How do I make my resolutions come true?????

• By giving a full attention in class when the teacher is explaining
• By motivating myself to become a more discipline person
• To think twice before I follow my temptations
• Maybe to make a plan for my daily routines
• Maybe to buy or borrow more english books

Back to the topic of resolutions, haven't really gave a serious thought bout it though. But since our Sir is so eager to find out our resolution, better come up with something eh? So here it goes...

• Work hard and smart for A level, achieve good results so can apply for scholarship to UK perhaps?
• Lose at least 2Kg per month.( ki siao).
• Go Singapore with yee teng (persuade her to let me live at her house as well).
• Find the most suitable boyfriend for yee teng ( yeah right?!).
• Get my driving license.
• Save ang pao money for sgp trip.
• Go work with eteng ( if possible).

Notice to all: Most of the above statement were written by beloved Yee Teng, but i agree to almost all of it. ( haha yea la all of it ).

Hmm it is hard to say but I really9000x want it coz what i notice so far is females are hardworking than males though. They tend to work hard on what they are doing. my Comment about GM food

anyway I do like Gm food if the quality is getting better and it doesn't cause any alergies to me coz I dont have any alergies though so I dont wanna get any alergies just because i eat Gm food k???But I wish that the Gm food has various taste for example: I do like mangoesteen(is the spelling correct??hehe) so I want it to have many taste like sweet and sour wow I can't wait for it hehe anyway I want it to have many shapes like star, heart shape(Oopsss!hehe) and etc. . . so anyone like to volunteer for it???hehe thats all..

Natural VS Genatically modified food

In my opinion, GMF food is bad because whatever in it is not a safe substance cause if we were to eat in a long effect it might or not affect the practical balance in our body in other worgs it do more harms than good in our body. We cannot completely belive the authorities that the Gmf food is safe to consume just because there a label that mention all of this that's it's o.k. Still I'm not saying that it's the worse sin evern to commit. No, what I meant was that we're not completely sure if this product is safest thing in the planet. If ti was that good then in world health statistic state that majority those that consumed the GMF die in a tender age of below 50 years old. Generally, it's better to eat natural food than GMF food.

GM Food? like food cans ( is it..?) well Gm food is a food which its DNA has been altered..well that what the book says..The purpose of GM food is to improve its quality . I think Gm food is safe to eat because no harmful effects has been reported.

What are genetically-modified foods?

The term GM foods or GMOs (genetically-modified organisms) is most commonly used to refer to crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest molecular biology techniques. These plants have been modified in the laboratory to enhance desired traits such as increased resistance to herbicides or improved nutritional content. The enhancement of desired traits has traditionally been undertaken through breeding, but conventional plant breeding methods can be very time consuming and are often not very accurate. Genetic engineering, on the other hand, can create plants with the exact desired trait very rapidly and with great accuracy. For example, plant geneticists can isolate a gene responsible for drought tolerance and insert that gene into a different plant. The new genetically-modified plant will gain drought tolerance as well. Not only can genes be transferred from one plant to another, but genes from non-plant organisms also can be used. The best known example of this is the use of B.t. genes in corn and other crops. B.t., or Bacillus thuringiensis, is a naturally occurring bacterium that produces crystal proteins that are lethal to insect larvae. B.t. crystal protein genes have been transferred into corn, enabling the corn to produce its own pesticides against insects such as the European corn borer. What are some of the advantages
of GM foods?

The world population has topped 6 billion people and is predicted to double in the next 50 years. Ensuring an adequate food supply for this booming population is going to be a major challenge in the years to come. GM foods promise to meet this need in a number of ways:

  Pest resistance Crop losses from insect pests can be staggering, resulting in devastating financial loss for farmers and starvation in developing countries. Farmers typically use many tons of chemical pesticides annually. Consumers do not wish to eat food that has been treated with pesticides because of potential health hazards, and run-off of agricultural wastes from excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers can poison the water supply and cause harm to the environment. Growing GM foods such as B.t. corn can help eliminate the application of chemical pesticides and reduce the cost of bringing a crop to market.
• 
  Herbicide tolerance For some crops, it is not cost-effective to remove weeds by physical means such as tilling, so farmers will often spray large quantities of different herbicides (weed-killer) to destroy weeds, a time-consuming and expensive process, that requires care so that the herbicide doesn't harm the crop plant or the environment. Crop plants genetically-engineered to be resistant to one very powerful herbicide could help prevent environmental damage by reducing the amount of herbicides needed. For example, Monsanto has created a strain of soybeans genetically modified to be not affected by their herbicide product Roundup ®. A farmer grows these soybeans which then only require one application of weed-killer instead of multiple applications, reducing production cost and limiting the dangers of agricultural waste run-off.

  Disease resistance There are many viruses, fungi and bacteria that cause plant diseases. Plant biologists are working to create plants with genetically-engineered resistance to these diseases.
• 
  Cold tolerance Unexpected frost can destroy sensitive seedlings. An antifreeze gene from cold water fish has been introduced into plants such as tobacco and potato. With this antifreeze gene, these plants are able to tolerate cold temperatures that normally would kill unmodified seedlings. (Note: I have not been able to find any journal articles or patents that involve fish antifreeze proteins in strawberries, although I have seen such reports in newspapers. I can only conclude that nothing on this application has yet been published or patented.)

  Drought tolerance/salinity tolerance As the world population grows and more land is utilized for housing instead of food production, farmers will need to grow crops in locations previously unsuited for plant cultivation. Creating plants that can withstand long periods of drought or high salt content in soil and groundwater will help people to grow crops in formerly inhospitable places.
• 
  Nutrition Malnutrition is common in third world countries where impoverished peoples rely on a single crop such as rice for the main staple of their diet. However, rice does not contain adequate amounts of all necessary nutrients to prevent malnutrition. If rice could be genetically engineered to contain additional vitamins and minerals, nutrient deficiencies could be alleviated. For example, blindness due to vitamin A deficiency is a common problem in third world countries. Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Institute for Plant Sciences have created a strain of "golden" rice containing an unusually high content of beta-carotene (vitamin A). Since this rice was funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, a non-profit organization, the Institute hopes to offer the golden rice seed free to any third world country that requests it. Plans were underway to develop a golden rice that also has increased iron content. However, the grant that funded the creation of these two rice strains was not renewed, perhaps because of the vigorous anti-GM food protesting in Europe, and so this nutritionally-enhanced rice may not come to market at all.
• 
  Pharmaceuticals Medicines and vaccines often are costly to produce and sometimes require special storage conditions not readily available in third world countries. Researchers are working to develop edible vaccines in tomatoes and potatoes. These vaccines will be much easier to ship, store and administer than traditional injectable vaccines.
• 
  Phytoremediation Not all GM plants are grown as crops. Soil and groundwater pollution continues to be a problem in all parts of the world. Plants such as poplar trees have been genetically engineered to clean up heavy metal pollution from contaminated soil.

What are some of the criticisms against
GM foods?

Environmental activists, religious organizations, public interest groups, professional associations and other scientists and government officials have all raised concerns about GM foods, and criticized agribusiness for pursuing profit without concern for potential hazards, and the government for failing to exercise adequate regulatory oversight. It seems that everyone has a strong opinion about GM foods. Even the Vatican and the Prince of Wales have expressed their opinions. Most concerns about GM foods fall into three categories: environmental hazards, human health risks, and economic concerns.

Environmental hazards

• 
  Unintended harm to other organisms Last year a laboratory study was published in Nature showing that pollen from B.t. corn caused high mortality rates in monarch butterfly caterpillars. Monarch caterpillars consume milkweed plants, not corn, but the fear is that if pollen from B.t. corn is blown by the wind onto milkweed plants in neighboring fields, the caterpillars could eat the pollen and perish. Although the Nature study was not conducted under natural field conditions, the results seemed to support this viewpoint. Unfortunately, B.t. toxins kill many species of insect larvae indiscriminately; it is not possible to design a B.t. toxin that would only kill crop-damaging pests and remain harmless to all other insects. This study is being reexamined by the USDA, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other non-government research groups, and preliminary data from new studies suggests that the original study may have been flawed. This topic is the subject of acrimonious debate, and both sides of the argument are defending their data vigorously. Currently, there is no agreement about the results of these studies, and the potential risk of harm to non-target organisms will need to be evaluated further.
• 
  Reduced effectiveness of pesticides Just as some populations of mosquitoes developed resistance to the now-banned pesticide DDT, many people are concerned that insects will become resistant to B.t. or other crops that have been genetically-modified to produce their own pesticides.
• 
  Gene transfer to non-target species Another concern is that crop plants engineered for herbicide tolerance and weeds will cross-breed, resulting in the transfer of the herbicide resistance genes from the crops into the weeds. These "superweeds" would then be herbicide tolerant as well. Other introduced genes may cross over into non-modified crops planted next to GM crops. The possibility of interbreeding is shown by the defense of farmers against lawsuits filed by Monsanto. The company has filed patent infringement lawsuits against farmers who may have harvested GM crops. Monsanto claims that the farmers obtained Monsanto-licensed GM seeds from an unknown source and did not pay royalties to Monsanto. The farmers claim that their unmodified crops were cross-pollinated from someone else's GM crops planted a field or two away. More investigation is needed to resolve this issue.

There are several possible solutions to the three problems mentioned above. Genes are exchanged between plants via pollen. Two ways to ensure that non-target species will not receive introduced genes from GM plants are to create GM plants that are male sterile (do not produce pollen) or to modify the GM plant so that the pollen does not contain the introduced gene. Cross-pollination would not occur, and if harmless insects such as monarch caterpillars were to eat pollen from GM plants, the caterpillars would survive.

Another possible solution is to create buffer zones around fields of GM crops. For example, non-GM corn would be planted to surround a field of B.t. GM corn, and the non-GM corn would not be harvested. Beneficial or harmless insects would have a refuge in the non-GM corn, and insect pests could be allowed to destroy the non-GM corn and would not develop resistance to B.t. pesticides. Gene transfer to weeds and other crops would not occur because the wind-blown pollen would not travel beyond the buffer zone. Estimates of the necessary width of buffer zones range from 6 meters to 30 meters or more. This planting method may not be feasible if too much acreage is required for the buffer zones.

Human Health Risk

• 
  Allergenicity Many children in the US and Europe have developed life-threatening allergies to peanuts and other foods. There is a possibility that introducing a gene into a plant may create a new allergen or cause an allergic reaction in susceptible individuals. A proposal to incorporate a gene from Brazil nuts into soybeans was abandoned because of the fear of causing unexpected allergic reactions. Extensive testing of GM foods may be required to avoid the possibility of harm to consumers with food allergies. Labeling of GM foods and food products will acquire new importance, which I shall discuss later.
• 
  Unknown effects on human health There is a growing concern that introducing foreign genes into food plants may have an unexpected and negative impact on human health. A recent article published in Lancet examined the effects of GM potatoes on the digestive tract in rats. This study claimed that there were appreciable differences in the intestines of rats fed GM potatoes and rats fed unmodified potatoes. Yet critics say that this paper, like the monarch butterfly data, is flawed and does not hold up to scientific scrutiny. Moreover, the gene introduced into the potatoes was a snowdrop flower lectin, a substance known to be toxic to mammals. The scientists who created this variety of potato chose to use the lectin gene simply to test the methodology, and these potatoes were never intended for human or animal consumption.

On the whole, with the exception of possible allergenicity, scientists believe that GM foods do not present a risk to human health.

Economic concerns

Bringing a GM food to market is a lengthy and costly process, and of course agri-biotech companies wish to ensure a profitable return on their investment. Many new plant genetic engineering technologies and GM plants have been patented, and patent infringement is a big concern of agribusiness. Yet consumer advocates are worried that patenting these new plant varieties will raise the price of seeds so high that small farmers and third world countries will not be able to afford seeds for GM crops, thus widening the gap between the wealthy and the poor. It is hoped that in a humanitarian gesture, more companies and non-profits will follow the lead of the Rockefeller Foundation and offer their products at reduced cost to impoverished nations.

Patent enforcement may also be difficult, as the contention of the farmers that they involuntarily grew Monsanto-engineered strains when their crops were cross-pollinated shows. One way to combat possible patent infringement is to introduce a "suicide gene" into GM plants. These plants would be viable for only one growing season and would produce sterile seeds that do not germinate. Farmers would need to buy a fresh supply of seeds each year. However, this would be financially disastrous for farmers in third world countries who cannot afford to buy seed each year and traditionally set aside a portion of their harvest to plant in the next growing season. In an open letter to the public, Monsanto has pledged to abandon all research using this suicide gene technology.

My Raya Memoir

Last week I spent my raya at belait where both my parent's relatives live there. It was fun but at the same it was tired kind of because I had to look after my annoying sister. However it was o.k as well that I got to meet my favourite person hwo's was my aunt who had had less burden on her shoulders and I was glad. Whereas for my parent the usual: talk non-stop or babblying away. Yeah, that's what I called "a raya that lasted in everyone memories"

Exams month..

I only take Maths and GP for this year's AS-level exam so meaning to say next year i am gonna take Physics and Chemistry huh I just wish i will manage to get better results for the future hahaha anyway it is not funny ...btw last night I got a bad dream but not really a bad dream it was just uncategorised dream (does 'uncategorised' exist?hahaha i dont know) anyway back to my dream.... It was that when I went to the hall there were only chairs and no table for the exam and I was astounded and wondered how come that happened anyway fortunately it was just a dream so forget it kkk????bye@adios!
